Underwriting is the insurer’s process for deciding whether to offer coverage, what premium class applies, and whether policy modifications are required.
Information Commonly Reviewed
- Age and requested coverage amount
- Current health and medical history
- Prescription history and available records
- Tobacco or nicotine use
- Driving history, occupation, hobbies, travel, and other risk factors
- Financial justification for larger coverage amounts
No Medical Exam Does Not Mean No Underwriting
A policy marketed as “no exam” may still use health questions, prescription databases, motor-vehicle records, identity checks, or electronic data. Some applicants may receive a quick decision; others may be asked for an exam or records.
Why Premiums Differ
Two people of the same age can receive different offers because carriers use different guidelines and because individual histories differ. An advertisement or preliminary quote is not a final underwriting offer.
How to Reduce Delays
- Answer every question completely and honestly.
- Have physician, medication, and identification details available.
- Respond promptly to follow-up requests.
- Do not cancel existing coverage until new coverage is issued, accepted, and in force.
